South Florida to Convert I-95 Carpool HOV Lanes to a Toll Lanes?
There are talks to 'restripe' the carpool lanes of I-95 in South Broward County and Miami-Dade County to new 'toll lanes'. The new lanes would go from I-595 interchange south to Downtown Miami. The thinking is that this will ease traffic congestion by offering an 'express' lane at a price.
A row of plastic poles will separate the express lanes from the general traffic lanes. Drivers will be able to enter and exit the express lanes at I-595, between Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Ives Dairy Road, the Golden Glades, and between Northwest 119th and Northwest 103rd streets and I-395.
I think this is a stupid idea. Can you imagine the traffic problems this will create? Nobody will use it and the other lanes will be packed. They really should put the energy into creating an effective mass-transit system.
