Newly Opened Highrise vs. Newly Planned Highrise in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale.

Residents of the tallest building in downtown Ft. Lauderdale (River House) are fuming about a new proposed building next door. Originally, the building was to be a 9-story condo/townhouse complex. Then it changed to a 25-story circular condo-complex. Now, developers are hoping to build a rectangle 27-story hotel-office multi-use building. This would block some of the River House residents views. This has them fuming mad. River House condo's are quite expensive and a big selling point is the 'view'. They are also concerned this new 'boxy' building will be ugly and take away from the area.

The reason for the changes to the project is due mostly to the slowdown in the Florida real estate market. The once 'white hot' demand for residential condo's has slowed quite a bit. That brought to light the hotel-office idea. There really isn't a large downtown hotel in Ft. Lauderdale so it would be a great addition if done right.

The developers are willing to compromise, however the project still has to go through city approval. Stay tuned.
