Possible Expansion of Cruise Terminals at Port Everglades....New Genesis Class Ships?
Port Everglades is currently in talks with Royal Caribbean to possibly be the full-time home of 2 new cruise ships. The ships in the 'Genesis' class are currently under construction and will be the world's most expensive to build (at $1.2 billion). These would also be much bigger than the Royal Caribbean 'Freedom of the Seas' ship that holds 4,300 passengers.
The expansion at the terminal would cost an estimated $37.4 million to complete. The port plans on asking Broward County to renegotiate it's contract with RC (Royal Caribbean) so it could offset some of the cost by adding a 'passenger fee'.
Royal Caribbean is being very tight lipped for now...only saying they have been in 'early talks' about the Genesis project. There still is a chance they may launch in Miami, but officials say Port Everglades is much more 'attractive'. The construction could happen quicker and the airport and interstate is tied into the Port very nicely.
This could bring 3,000 new jobs to the area, not to mention lots of tourist dollars.
