Dania Jai-Alai New Casino Put "On Hold"

It's been reported that Boyd Gaming (the Las Vegas company that just bought the place this year) is 'rethinking' it's plans to build a $180 Million casino on the site.  They are saying that with the high tax base (the Broward slot casinos get taxed for the schools, plus get taxed for the state) is preventing them from making the money they anticipated.  They are even saying it is discouraging the success of the slot casinos.

They are taking a step back and trying to decide what type of facility would make the best fit financially.  The plan was to build a casino with 2 upscale restaurants, a nightclub and a few bars.  The new plan might call for more 'entertainment' options.  (I'm thinking bowling ally and movie theater!).

It is sad to see them having such problems, but you have to offer something else for the customers.  Just slots in a room with very expensive food options just doesn't cut it.  I've been to all 3 and it's kind of sad to make a special trip to the casino with $40...and it only lasts about an hour.  Then after your money is gone, there is nothing else to do.  We want to be entertained.  This is a tourist mecca, take advantage of that.  Make these properties a must see.

The state should re-think the tax base so that these places can at least get off the ground.  Why have the Seminoles be the only ones to benefit?
