Poker Hot, Slots Cool.

The new state laws for Florida Poker rooms have been great news for most around the state, while Broward's slot revenue has fallen below projections.

Although July has seen a small upswing in slot reveneue, it's still early to tell if new laws will help.    They are saying the slots are falling below projected numbers.  I could have predicted that one.  Most of the new slot casinos in Broward are going to need time to grow into the entertainment destination that the Seminoles have started with (Hard Rock Casino).  Everyone came out in crowds to see the new casinos and play...but the novelty has worn off.  Like I've said 100 times over and over...you need to offer something else for the local gambler.  Inexpensive quality food and other forms of entertainment are 2 big pieces you shouldn't overlook.  The slot player is not going to make a trip to a casino if there isn't really anything else to do at your property.  Please guys...start to invest in your properties and they will come!  Hopefully when the Seminoles and Florida pass something this month, the state will relax Broward's high tax % which will allow them more capital to invest in their properties.  They need to take notes from some of the Vegas 'off strip' casinos to see what draws the locals.  Heck, they should take a trip to Seminole Hard Rock.

The revenue in the Poker rooms have shot up about 60% from June to July.  The new laws increased the betting limits from $2 to $5 and now allows no-limit Texas-Hold'em games with a maximum $100 buy in.  In fact, many of the pari-mutuals now keep their poker rooms open on non-racing days.  Poker is still VERY popular.   These new laws bring the game in Florida up to the professional level as well.

The poker and slot player are 2 different types of players, so that explains why there is such different results.  In poker, you are sitting at a table for hours betting and it's more 'social'.  It's as much 'game' as it is gambling.  Slots are more solitary and random and you money can go quite quickly, which is why you need other entertainment options to keep you there longer.
