New Plan to Ease I-595 Rush Hour Traffic?
I guess this is going to be plan 'B'? The original plan was to build 2 elevated 'reversable' lanes to ease the congestion between the Turnpike and I-75. The elevated lanes were the option of choice because there is a 'light rail' train system planned and that would be running along what is now the medians. Officials are now saying they do not think the 2 lanes will be enough to support the Broward population explosion.
Here is plan 'B':
Officials now say there is room in the median for 3 lanes on ground level. BUT...only if westbound I-595 and State Rd 84 are shifted north. If they choose to do the 'shift', the future light rail will be elevated. There are a few 'road blocks' (hee hee). If the 2 roads are shifted, there will have to be a new wall built between the road and the water that it will run along. It would shave $200 million from the original plan 'A', but it would add an additional $200 Million to the light rail project.
I'm glad they are talking about the issue...but hope they put some thought into it. Do what needs to be done now...and do it right the first time. I'm also wondering if these new lanes will be a toll. I have a feeling they will be. It's going to cost a lot of money to drive in the new 'Lexus Lanes' on I-95 and then jump on these new express lanes on I-595. That means they really need to start thinking about a mass transit system that works and that is attractive for people to take.
