Development Still Moving Ahead in Wilton Manors.

Well, even with the slowdown in home sales, Wilton Manors still seems to have some grand plans.  During the past 5 years there have been a number of new condos built and the last few are almost all ready for occupancy.  Along with the residential surge in the city, they have been working at redeveloping the 'main' street (Wilton Drive).  The newest addition is the cities first Starbucks on 26th Street right near 5 points (behind Rosie's).  There are quite a few little shops and dining options on the 'Drive' to check out.  This posting is to list a few of the proposed or approved projects.

1.  The new Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve will be opening in a few months.  The park when all phases are complete it will have boat access via a floating dock, a scenic boardwalk along the river, a playground and two rental pavilions.  The manor house on the property will be available for rentals for weddings along with the pavilions.  The rental facility will have catering space and also a large kitchen all with a large courtyard outside.  The grand opening was supposed to happen Tuesday, September 18th at 6:30 PM.  Then phases of the park will open over the next few months.

2.  The old strip mall and nursery on the 2100 block of Wilton Drive (next to the Shoppes) have been cleared for the new "Wilton Park" project.  This has been in the works for quite some time and has won approval from the city to move forward.  The project will include 145 residential units, 19,000 sq feet of commercial space with parking.  Building should start very soon with an anticipated completion date early to mid 2009.

3.  Right next to "Wilton Park" will be the new Wilton Manors City Hall & Police building.  Construction will start in the spring with completion expected in the summer 2009.

4.  At 5 points (where Wilton Dr, 26th Street and Dixie intersect), Sterling Bank is currently remodeling the old 'Turkish' restaurant to use as a temporary branch as they plan and construct a new building next door.

5.  Wachovia Bank is still planning to open a branch also at 5 Points, where the old Angelica restaurant is.

6.  The construction will begin to move forward on the building at 2500 Wilton Drive (across from Sterling Bank site).  It stalled for a bit, but should start up again soon.  Revised plans now call for the mixed use building to house a 2 story restaurant and rooftop lounge.

7.  The city will still own the small piece of land at 5 Points and will plan on a landmark soon.  Something like a clock tower, fountain, etc.

8.  During some of the construction by the Shoppes, expect there to be some parking issues.  Lets hope it doesn't get too bad or people will find someplace else to go.  The city is thinking of some other parking solutions, so we'll see.  The new park also has a lot that can be used.

So....there is a lot of exciting things going on in Wilton Manors still.  Lets hope they move forward.  This will be quite the entertainment strip when it's all done.
