So It's Going to be a Hilton.
The new proposed waterfront Convention Center hotel for Ft. Lauderdale is going to be a Hilton Hotel. The hotel will have 1,000 rooms with an 'iconic' appearance at 27 stories. From what I can gather 'iconic' means it will look tropical and whimsical. An infinity-edge pool and outdoor dining areas. A 12,000 square foot spa is also planned. All the rooms will overlook the intercoastal waterway.
The struggle to build a hotel next to the Broward Convention Center has been going on for decades. Plans were made and fell through in the past and the city has historically voted down past proposals. This time they are hoping it's all a go. It will be built on the Northern Edge of Port Everglades, just off 17th Street. The hotel should be a great 'upscale' addition to the area. It's close to the beach, the cruise terminals and the convention center.
There are still a few hurdles, like gaining approval from the city of Ft. Lauderdale. They have historically voted down such large projects in that area due to the possible traffic influx. Hopefully by February 2008, everything will be in order for full development to start. If all goes according to plan, the hotel could be open in 2011 with rooms averaging $224 a night.
