Reader Input: $1.6 billion of new condos and hotel rooms are going up within a two mile strip on A1A - Ft. Lauderdale Beach
"1,642 new condos (actually most are what they call hotel condos) are scheduled to be completed in 2007/2008 along a 2 miles stretch along A1A from Las Olas Blvd. south to Sunrise Blvd. This number includes the Las Olas Beach Club (148 units), Trump Towers (293 units), St. Regis (187 units), The Atlantic (124 units), The W (517 units), and Hilton Resort (373).
These numbers do not include the 20 story Orion Resort which has already begun preliminary construction. Demolition of the Nachez and St. Tropez Hotels next to the Bonnet House started in mid October (2007). These properties are across the street from the old Howard Johnson's which is also scheduled to be demolished to make way for this new property.
If the average asking price is $1 million per unit (I am sure it is higher) the total value would be $1,642,000,000. This will generate over $40 million of new tax revenue for Broward County annually ... which hopefully they will use to replenish the sand on Ft. Lauderdale Beach! "
The W is below (Nov 2007) ... With the new Hilton Next Door, and the Trump Towers.

No, put that tax money towards transit!
Boy is it going to be expensive to stay on the beach with all these new four and five star hotels. I think it's great to see all these new buildings going up along the beach; help freshen up the "skyline." Though I have to say, which seems to plague all of South Florida, that all these new buildings look the same. One goes up and five others follow in its footsteps. Can't wait to see these things finished!

Just where are all the people who can afford these prices supposed to come from? And what are they going to do once they get here? These buildings are white elephants that will sit mostly empty for YEARS.
