People-Mover being discussed once again in Broward.

With the anticipated surge in tourists (the Royal Caribbean 'super cruise ships' are on their way)...Broward is once again examining a 'People-Mover' system.  This system would transport passengers from the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport directly to the cruise terminal area.  The talks include either a monorail type train or an elevated expressway with shuttle buses.

The original plan was scrapped after 9/11 when security was an issue.  They now feel that loop could be closed and the program could be a success.  They could even use the system to transport cargo and employees.

The system would be expensive...and the county would have to look for outside sources for capital to get the program started.  That could be done by passenger surcharges, Federal grants, independent investors.  It sounds like a great plan...maybe even consider extending it and having a 2nd stop a the beach.  If they end up building that convention center hotel...the port will be all set for the tons of cruisers that are planned.

A vote on updated plans is expected later this summer.

The Miami Zoo Monorail.  Could the proposed system look like this?
