Some Royal Caribbean cruise customers might get a refund.

Royal Caribbean,  one of the largest cruise lines in the world, recently agreed to a settlement to refund a 'special' fuel surcharge fee to around 300,000 bookings.  That could pile up to about $21 million or so for bookings as of November of last year.

The issue surfaced after there were over 300 complaints to Attorney General Bill McCollum.  It was found that the cruise line did not adequately disclose this charge at the time of booking which is a no no.  The Miami Herald reports that Royal Caribbean was actually very helpful in the resolution and took proactive measures that were in the best interest in the customer.  That's great to hear.   I would expect that the new surcharge will be disclosed everywhere now.  It's not going away...not with fuel costing so much.  The charge is said to be about $5 per passenger per day.

I've always wanted to take a cruise, especially since so many leave from South Florida.  While there are some great deals...I still have some second thoughts.  The extra costs can add up.  You really have to do your homework or consult with a travel agent (yes...there are travel agents still out there! and they actually can help you out a great deal.)
