Restaurant Review: Fajitas Spanish/Mexican Restaurant, Oakland Park
This newly opened Spanish/Mexican Restaurant is located on Andrews Ave. in Oakland Park in the old Joe's Diner location. Joe's closed some time ago and we really didn't see any sign of a new eating establishment until recently. I love Latin food so we didn't think twice to stop in and give them a try.
We were greeted immediately by the hostess and were brought to our table. The place looked about the same as Joe's, but MUCH cleaner and brighter. New carpeting, paint and some other cosmetic improvements did give you the feeling that the Fajitas owners wanted to give a good first impression. We arrived for lunch on a Sunday and there were about full tables. The dining room can hold quite a few customers, but for a new restaurant I thought it was a large crowd. One interesting item was the menu. It was printed on a sheet of paper. This could mean one of two things. Either... 1) The real menus were not printed yet or 2) They actually change the offerings depending on what is available. I almost want to say it's option #2 since the number of items on the menu were limited. I actually think that is a GREAT idea...offer less options and improve the overall quality of your food. You are also pretty much guaranteed fresh ingredients as well.

Let me just say that the staff at Fajitas was very friendly and super fast and spot on. We never had to ask for refills on our soft drinks...and it seemed like everyone helped out. Other servers were even getting refills. It's great to see that in a new restaurant.
Prior to ordering we were given a basket of chips and two FRESH salsas (one hot and one mild). The chips were warm and fresh. The other great thing was that they kept our chip basket full and the salsa flowing. (Like we needed the 2nd basket...but of course we ate it!)

Jeff ordered the Palomilla - pounded steak, topped with chopped onions and parsley, with white rice, black beans and sweet plantains. I ordered the Lechon Asado - roasted pork with onions and garlic sauce, white rice, black beans and sweet plantains. The food was served fast and was hot. Jeff loved his meal and said the steak was not overdone and was very tender. My pork (boy was it a large portion!) was very good as well. The rice was fresh and not dried out (I hate dried rice). So overall we were very happy with our selections and the overall quality. We both give our meals a B+.

If you are a fan of Latin food, we encourage you to give them a try. We will definitely be going back to try the fajitas (yes they actually serve them) and hope they keep up the great work. They also offer some fish options as well if you are not a pork or steak fan.
