What's in a name?  Well it all depends on what the name 'means'.  Recently, Broward Community College (and Palm Beach Community College) filed papers that would change each of their names to Broward College and Palm Beach College.  The 'Community' label of each would be history making the new names 'Broward College' and 'Palm Beach College'.

The reason the institutions are trying to gain approval is the steady increase of 4-year degree programs offered.  A school that has 'Community' in the name, usually means that they only offer 2-year programs.  This could greatly impact the enrollment and also help spread the word that the BCC (or BC soon) and PBCC (or PBC soon)now offer the 4-year programs. 

More than likely, the bills will be passed at state level.  I'm not sure if this allows for any state budget changes.  I would be interested to see if that was also a factor..given the time in which this is happening.  If anyone has any information about the financial side and what this 'name' change will do (if anything) please feel free to leave a comment.
