Saks Fith Avenue store in Galleria Mall to close in July.

Things are about to change once again in the Ft. Lauderdale Galleria Mall.  In 2002, Lord & Taylor closed it's doors...then in 2005, Macy's got hammered by Hurricane Wilma and closed for major renovations and repair.  In 2006 the new 'wing' opened in the mall bringing in some great dining options along with an Apple Store.  2007 ushered in the grand 're-opening' of the Macy's store.

On July 20th, the Saks store will close it's doors for good.  Saks representatives say it's not due to the recent down-turn in retail, but the stores poor sales for quite some time.  60 employees will lose their jobs...however, they were offered transfers to other Saks stores or a severance package.  I hate to see stores close and hate to see the empty store fronts even more.

This does 'open the door' (so to speak)..for the Galleria to search for other large retail stores.  With the Lord & Taylor and Saks store closed...it allows for some major renovations for that 'wing' of the mall.  That side of the mall has been lacking and seems almost as an afterthought when compared to the rest of the mall.  They did a really good job in the renovations and now just need to find a good anchor store and maybe some restaurants.  Galleria has become a great place to eat and shop so lets hope they don't drag their feet too long to find replacement stores.

On a side note...there are a few new things opening soon in the Galleria Mall.  Upscale seafood restaurant 'Trulucks' will likely open next year (hey..that's only 6 1/2 months away!).  They are known for their stone crab and have another location in Boca. Kate Spade will be opening this fall next to Mayor's Jewelers.
