New threat in South Florida waters...just might be the Lion Fish.

The Lion Fish is native to the Pacific Ocean...but scientists are predicting that this poisonous fish might soon find it's ways to the waters off of South Florida.  The Lion Fish is also a very popular aquarium fish and often becomes too big for owners.  The owners then let them go in our waters which is just asking for trouble.  Currently, they are saying there is a large number off of Cancun and the Bahamas and they could make their way to us in no time.  The big problem?  There are no real predators here since these fish are not native to the area.  This could throw the whole ecosystem off balance.  Also, their sting is pretty nasty.  The pain can last 15-20 minutes and can even cause the person a visit to the hospital...and maybe even death.

This is a wake-up call to people that like to buy exotic pets and decide to set them 'free' when they don't want them anymore.  You could really cause a much bigger problem in the end.  Just look at the Iguana population here.  They've multiplied like rabbits and have become very dominant in the environment pecking off smaller reptiles that have always called Florida home.
