Restaurant Review: Victoria Park Diner, Ft. Lauderdale. UPDATE!
UPDATE!!: Went back to revisit a few months ago (April 2011). Wow..what a difference some time can make. I guess our first impression years ago was the 'real' impression. The service was HORRIBLE...the restaurant actually looked 'dirty' and the food was a dissapointment. I don't understand how a place can go downhill so fast. We sat and waited for someone to take our order for 15 minutes. We finally got someone to take it and the food was loaded with grease (more than the usual diner) and was not worth the money. This is now officially on our DO NOT GO list. Too bad.

Well, I always say that everyplace deserves a second chance. Sometimes you are sorry you did...sometimes you are pleasantly surprised and happy you did. I can say that our recent trip to Victoria Park Diner was really good.
The restaurant opened about a year ago (wow, how time flies) in an old Miami Subs on East Sunrise Blvd. Within a month, we stopped in for lunch and were less than impressed. I won't go into the details, since that was so close to when they opened and was about a year ago. I'll focus on our breakfast today.
The restaurant isn't the most glamorous diners around, but then again, most diners are low-key. It looks clean and actually has huge windows which is nice. The dining area is nice and bright with your typical booth and table set-up.

It was kind of busy when we got there and there were a few large groups but got sat right away. Our server took a few minutes to greet us, but she was very friendly and apologized for the wait. They were short handed today. Our drinks stayed full and we never had to stop her for anything. I've worked in a restaurant long ago and know how difficult breakfast is...let alone when you have a server or two call in sick. She even offered to take our picture when she saw us take our cameras out. (Little did she know we were taking pictures of the food!)
The menu is HUGE with all sorts of diner fare. It definitely has the Greek Diner feel from the colors of the dining room to the Gyros on the menu. They have a large variety of breakfast sandwiches with is great. I ordered the Ham & Egg Croissantwich (served with hash browns) and Jeff ordered an omelette with Chopped Gyros meat, spinach, feta cheese, onions and tomatoes (served with hash browns and toast).
The food came out quick and was HOT! My croissant was fresh and buttery....and the hash browns were crispy outside and soft and hot in the inside. Jeff's omelette was HUGE! I actually didn't think it would taste very good...but I had to have a bite and actually wanted my own. It was that good.

The cost was actually a good value as well. The omelet was $7.95 and my croissantwich was $5.99. With tax and tip (and 2 sodas) we spent about $20. We will definitely be back to Victoria Park Diner for breakfast. Give them a try if you are in the area or are on your way to the beach.
