2009-2010 $3.5 billion budget shortfall for Florida?

Sun-Sentinel is reporting that Florida could see a $3.5 billion budget shortfall in 2009-2010.  The culprit?  Well, from the sound of it...it's a bunch of reasons.  From the lowering of property taxes to additional spending for state courts, prisons and other 'constitutional' items.  Add to that a general fall in tax revenue due to a slowdown in the economy and Florida Legislatures could have a big headache in a year.

It always amazes me how people don't see these kinds of things on the horizon.  Just like our property values.  Home prices couldn't continue to rise 10% every year or we would all be paying $700,000 for a 1 bedroom condo.  It's time we think about other means of brining in tax revenue.  Would a penny sales tax increase really hurt?  So I spend an extra 50 cents on a $50 purchase.  It's the people buying the $100,000 cars that would see a huge difference.  And I say...so what....at least until I win the lotto and begin to buy $100,000 cars.
