Restaurant Review: CC's Fish Camp, Oakland Park (with Restaurant.com coupon)

6/26/09-UPDATE****CC's Fish Camp is CLOSED.  It appears that the outside has undergone a renovation and a sign is now saying 'Opening Soon - Diner 24'.

CC's Fish camp has been open for...well at least over a year now.  CC's sister restaurant is the Moonlight Diner off of Andrews and Cypress Creek in Ft. Lauderdale (they are owned by the same people).  The owners bought an old Italian Restaurant that closed after Hurricane Wilma slammed into our area in 2005.  They took their time rebuilding the place and it shows.  The outside is very nautical and fresh looking.

The inside is very clean and 'sharp' looking.  The booths and tables look custom built which is a nice touch.  The dining room is split into 2 sections.  The regular dining area with booths and tables to the left, and the bar area to the right.  Now, this is not a wild 'happy hour' type place.  Each time I've been here, the bar stools were kind of empty.  It's a relaxing setting with a lot of 'fishing props' to entertain you.

The menu is of course seafood based.  They also have a few steak and chicken selections along with ribs and burgers.  It's rounded enough to please everyone.    The prices are reasonable and we actually found a Restaurant.com coupon for CC's so the food was practically a steal.  It was for $25 off your bill for any $35 food purchase.  (You can get this certificate for $10 or less..more on how to get your own coupon at the end of this post.)

Most full dinners include a small dinner salad and choice of side item.  OH...and when you are seated, you are brought freshly baked mini cornbread muffins with fresh strawberry butter.  They are a perfect way to start a meal and actually one of my favorite things of the meal.  I ordered the Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing with my salad (and actually got Raspberry Vinaigrette) and Jeff ordered the Ranch.  We also both ordered a cup of French Onion Soup.

The Mini-Muffins were excellent and the strawberry butter was a great choice to pair them with.  The muffins were soft and tasty.  The salad came out next.  Very underwhelming.  I will bet it is the 'salad in a bag' you can get at Costco...it had that weird taste.  The French Onion Soup was just 'ok'.  The cheese on top was kind of 'well done' and the croĆ»ton (bread that is under the cheese) took up 1/2 the cup.  I wouldn't order it again.  The pacing of the salad and soup was a bit off as well.  About 5 minutes after we got our salad, the soup came.  I hate that.

Next out...our main dinner.  I ordered the Seafood Trio.  The 'trio' consists of Shrimp Scampi, Blacked Mahi-Mahi and a Lump Crab Cake.  Oh, and a side.  I went for the baked potato.  Jeff ordered the Snow Crab Dinner.  It's one pound of crab legs with butter and a side.  He chose french fries.

Here's my take on the Seafood Trio-
The Shrimp Scampi was a bit bland and not that hot.  There was hardly any garlic flavor and the 6 shrimp seemed a bit small and lost in the little plate.  The crab cake...was ok.  The crab was mushy and I thought it would have been a little more 'lumped crab'.  It was also very very small.  The Mahi-Mahi was spiced very well, but the fillet was very, very thin..maybe under 1/4 inch thick.  You hardly got any fish with a regular bite.  The sauces were a nice touch, but I felt that the 3 components didn't go very well together.

Jeff's take on the Snow Crab-
They were 'ok'.  Not much you can do to crab legs.  Either they are really exceptionally good, really bad or just ok.  These were 'ok' and a good choice to get your fill for a while.  They were not that expensive so you won't 'break the bank'.

The french fries were fresh and very good, while the baked potato was a bit overdone.  But they did give me a ton of sour cream!

The meal without the Restaurant.com certificate came to about $40.  With the discount $13.93!  WOW!

I feel that if you go into this restaurant thinking of it as a 'seafood diner, in a slightly upscale setting'....you won't be disappointed.  CC's offers a clean, well decorated dining room with a friendly wait staff.  They also offer 'sunset specials' which seems to bring the people in.  With the Restaurant.com certificate, eating at CC's is a 'no brainer'.
