Downtown Ft. Lauderdale project gets a green light.

Ft. Lauderdale's first 'high-rise' building may soon be getting a new neighbor.  City commissioners approved conceptual plans for the southeast corner of Broward Blvd. and Southeast Third Avenue.  The plans call for a complex consisting of a hotel, condo and office complex.  Commercial space would also be slated at the sidewalk level with 35,000 square ft of space.  While the market is very soft for condo development, the owner of the land is looking to the future.  Lets face it...downtown will keep getting developed...it's a downtown.  Once the next gas price hikes start, people will re-think their living situation and may want to live closer to mass transit or their workplace.

With the approval, the owners must still submit plans to be approved.  Of course there is the financial question as well.  If credit markets improve, that may help.

They are planning to build no higher than the existing Landmark Bank tower which stands 28 stories.  The Landmark Bank tower was built in 1972 and was once the tallest building in Broward County.
