I-95 express toll lanes are now open.

The much talked about 'I-95 Express Toll Lanes' are now open.  The first phase of the project kicked of December 5, and it seemed to go smoothly.  I'm not too crazy about this...I still don't understand how they can charge a toll on an Interstate.  It's a public funded road system.

The toll amounts are not set and they can raise or lower the tolls at any time...depending on the traffic.  Higher traffic, means higher tolls.  The first part of the day, drivers were paying 25 cents, but the price went up at 4 PM to $1.50.  From what I hear, the 'free' lanes were packed and moving slow...while the express lanes had less people making it a faster route.  Duh.  The Florida DOT had great timing though, at least now that gas has fallen below $2 a gallon around much of the area...many more people will probably not mind the extra money they'll need to pay.

Oh...by the way....this new toll system is FAST PASS only.  No cash.

Here is a map of the project.
