Ft. Lauderdale's South Beach parking lot to change rates.

Ft. Lauderdale city commissioners have given the green light to a few changes with rates and hours for the South Beach parking lot.  The lot sits a few blocks south of Las Olas Blvd (700 Seabreeze Blvd.) and gives beach-goers access to public restrooms, picnic tables, and playground equipment (and of course the beach).  Currently the lot charges a $10 flat fee for the day.  The new rates will be based on a parking meter system.  I'm guessing it's not the single meter per spot, but rather the type that prints out a ticket with your time that you display in your window.  These new meters take debit/credit cards as well.  I've even heard that some of the new technology allows you to pay additional money with your cellphone...so you don't have to walk all the way back to the meter to feed it.  Exactly what kind of meter will be used remains to be seen.

If you are a city resident and purchase a $5 resident parking permit, you will be able to park in this lot for free.  For the rest of us...the meter rates will be $1.75 per hour.

The new 'longer hours' of the parking lot will be 5 AM - 2 AM.  That should give everyone plenty of time to catch the sun and play on the beach.  It will even be a great place to park if you are hitting one of the clubs or restaurants in the area.

The final vote for the change is going to be held on January 6th at the commission's next meeting.
