Circuit City closing ALL US stores.

Another sad time for retail. I'm sure you have already heard that Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection late last year. Normally a company tries to 'restructure' and emerge out of Bankruptcy. Circuit City was not so lucky. With the bad holiday shopping season and a lack of investors, the company had no other choice but to liquidate all inventory in ALL US stores. This news means that all 567 stores will close permanently after the liquidation sales are complete. This also means that 34,000 people will be out of a job.
All stores that are still open are offering discounts of 10 - 30%, which includes the store in Ft. Lauderdale on US1 (between Oakland Park Blvd. and Sunrise). I stopped in today and the place was packed. It looked like it was the week prior to Christmas. While the discounts mostly are at the 10% mark (like iPods, LCD TVs), CDs and DVDs are at 20%. A few 'accessories' are at 30%. I found the DVDs to have a high 'regular price'...but CDs looked to be priced well and already were picked over a bit.
You can wait a few weeks for the discounts to get larger...but, you take the chance that your item will not be there. Another thing you might want to remember is that ALL SALES ARE FINAL. Would totally suck if you get your new LCD TV home and it doesn't work. But I'm sure if it doesn't work out of the box...they might let you exchange it. Ask before you buy. Also...don't buy the gift cards they have out....not sure why they still have them on display. And the cashier will have to 'manually' take off the discount from each item you buy. I guess their software hasn't been updated yet.
This makes another empty store in that strip-mall on US1. Closed- Linens N Things, Bombay Co., Rag Shop, Pier One Kids, Lone Star Steakhouse...soon Circuit City. CompUSA already went through one liquidation sale last year. Lets hope they stay afloat...or all they will have there is Panera and Pier One.

Great post. I heard about the bankruptcy today and was unsure if the store on US1 had started liquidating. I'm not going to rush out there since most of the good stuff is only marked down 10%. It's a waiting game at this point...
