New commuter train route possible.

The Tri-Rail might be getting some competition.  The Florida East Coast Railway is entertaining the idea of allowing passenger trains to run along it's track.  The new owners of the rail say it's a possibility only if it will not get in the way of their freight business.  Why is this a big deal?  Well...the railway runs through the heart of Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm.  It's farther east than Tri-Rail and many think would be a better commuting solution.  20 years ago, then owners of the railway passed on the same idea.

The next step is for a few more approvals (FTA approval) and some cash.  I'm sure finding funding outside of raising taxes will be tough this next year.  By 2010 they are hoping to have a plan in place with around 60-90 stations mapped out. When/If the plan passes and comes to be...they will have to purchase passenger cars and coordinate the freight and people.  I'm sure it's easier than it sounds.

Only time will tell if this plan gains steam.  I'm guessing if gas costs skyrocket again soon...this plan will have a better chance of completion.
