Restaurant Review: Ferdos Grill, Ft. Lauderdale

Ferdos Grill has been around for years. It's located on US1 in Ft. Lauderdale and specializes in 'Middle Eastern' food...more notably the 'kabob'. This is one of those restaurants that I've driven by many times, but never made it inside. Yesterday, that changed. We decided to give them a try. We got there a bit early...around 6 PM and the restaurant was a bit slow. We were sat right away and given the basket of warm pita bread. The restaurant is decorated nicely and has a cozy feeling with all kinds of unique decor around. They even have belly-dancing on Saturday night to make it feel that much more authentic.

We ordered an appetizer of Chicken Wings with Garlic and spices. They have everything from stuffed grape leaves to hummus as well. Jeff's not really a hummus lover (except for the ones Publix sells with the hot oil on top)...so we went for the wings. The wings came out fresh and hot. They actually seemed to be grilled rather than fried which was great. There was a lemon-garlic sauce on top of the wings which was also very good. They were nice sized wings and meaty. So far so good.

For the main course I went for the new Flat Iron Steak selection. It's served with fries or rice and steamed veggies. Jeff went for the Shish Kabob (beef) which is served with rice and veggies. Both were ordered medium and both came out cooked perfectly. My Flat Iron Steak was tender and flavorful and Jeff's Kabob was also very tender and flavorful. The fries on my dish were good...but I should have gotten the rice. The rice was fresh and infused with a lot of flavor and I guess a lot of butter or oil. The veggies were a disappointment. It was a medley and was way overcooked. They were mushy and didn't have much flavor. They definitely should rethink the veggies. Something also to note is that they offer seafood and vegetarian selections.

Overall the meal was good and while the total tab with two soft drinks came to about $45, it wasn't that expensive. There are some items on the menu that were on the lower priced side like the Gyros. You could definitely go to this restaurant on a budget and not break it. We skipped desert...we were stuffed.

My only suggestions to Ferdos Grill is to change your vegetable offering...or just don't overcook them. Also, the pita bread served at the start of the meal is good, but a bit plain. Maybe season it up a bit and grill it? Just a small tweak would have had me asking for more. The place was filling up fast when we were leaving at around 7:15 PM, so I guess the food is consistent. Us here in South Florida know the bad places and stay away. So if you are a fan of the kabob and Middle Eastern cuisine...or if you are in the mood for an affordable relaxing meal, give Ferdos Grill a try.
