Broward moving to four day school week?

Broward County is trying hard to think of ways it can save money when it comes to eduction. It's not easy when you are looking to cut costs...but improve the quality of eduction. The latest idea is to cut the school week down from it's current five days...to four. Sounds great to students, I'm sure...but it could be a mess for parents. Many parents rely on school to keep kids busy and school also allows parents to work full time while saving some money on day-care. Is this really a smart decision? Some think that kids should go to school year-round and now cutting a day would be very hard on kids in the long run. It won't be easy to make the change.

The county has to get approval from the Teacher's Union so with all the contract negotiations...no changes would be in place until 2010-2011. It looks like idea only impacts High School kids. The county is also saying that teacher's salary wouldn't change. They money savings would be in the form of utilities and transportation.

I personally think this would be a huge mistake. Education in Broward already has to make improvements in it's schools and this may set them back even further.
