Water Park to make a spash on Ft. Lauderdale Beach?

Ft. Lauderdale recently approved plans to build a new and improved International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum and with that would come a new Water Park with slides and a lazy river.  They would build this on the existing piece of land off of the Intercoastal where the Swimming Hall of Fame currently sits.  They would also add more parking for visitors to the Water Park and would also have additional parking for the yearly International Boat Show.

Original plans called for an Aquarium to also be built...but officials voted that piece down.  While they want to fast track this project, they still have to decide how much money the city wants to contribute to the overall project.  They feel it will be a great tourist and local draw and will bring some revenue into the city as well.

The piece of land that this would be built on isn't that large....so the Water Park wouldn't be your typical 25 water slides and 3 wave pools.  It would be more like an enhancement to the beach.   I am surprised that they passed on the aquarium.  Most large cities have one and they do quite well.  Maybe an aquarium down by the Arts & Entertainment District would be a nice addition.

I don't really understand this. How could a water park WITH a lazy river on such a small piece of property would get passed, while a multilevel aquarium wouldn't. It seems like it should be the other way around, if anything (though I would put my vote to an aquarium downtown vs barrier island).
