IMAX 3D takes movies to new heights, especially Avatar.
I just had to go see what all the Avatar fuss was about. It's being hyped as the most expensive movie made with some killer special effects. With that kind of hype...I decided to try my first IMAX 3D viewing. Here in South Florida, we have two choices for IMAX 3D.... Downtown Ft. Lauderdale and Aventura Mall's AMC Theater. Since I was headed to Aventura, I hit that one.
I always thought IMAX was that huge screen that was so big, you had to move your head to see everything. I think today, it relates to the equipment used in filming and showing the movie. The screen itself was larger than most first run movies, but not over sized. The glasses they give out are plastic and will fit over your existing glasses (if you wear them). Each eye lense is a different color and I was afraid it would take away from the color of the movie. I guess I had to wait and see.
They flash a note to "Please put on your 3D glasses" when the previews are about to start. I slid them on and they were actually quite comfortable. A little smudgy...but they fit well. (Bring something to clean them with.) The first preview was the new Alice in Wonderland. As soon as the first frame popped up...I was in awe. This is not the 3D of years past by leaps and bounds. It was amazing. Everything was 3D. Not cheap 'lets throw it at the screen' for a thrill...but the whole Wonderland world had depth. The best news? The color of the film was not changed one bit!
Once Avatar started...the 3D popped after the first minute. This movie is so visual and colorful....you MUST see it in 3D (IMAX 3D if possible). You get lost in the world and if feels like you are actually inside of the movie. I've also heard that Avatar is the first movie to really take advantage of the 3D tech, so this is the one to see, if you are a first timer. The story was pretty good as well. I even forgot I was wearing the glasses at some points.
IMAX is supposed to have a crystal clear picture, which I'm sure made the 3D experience much better...but I'm sure in a good movie theater, you won't be disappointed.
So...I'm now a 3D fan and really think this could be the next phase in watching movies. It was worth every penny.
Make sure you plan your IMAX 3D viewing in advance...even buy your tickets ahead of time. Lots of showings are selling out. Skip the box office lines and buy movie tickets online at Fandango.
