New Air Lauderdale Beach Fest in April looking like a no-fly-zone.

Lots of locals and tourists were disapointed when the Ft. Lauderdale Air & Sea Show was cancelled last year, with no return date announced. The long running show was a fun event that not only provided entertainment...but boosted the local economy. (Well, I know that residents at the beach probably hated the event.) Last year, it was announced that a new air show (to be called Air Lauderdale Beach Fest) was being planned for 2010 with a whole new format and new organizers. With the date of the event set...April 24-25, 2010...it seemed like it was going to go without a hitch.

Fast forward to March 2010....one month prior to the event. It's now being reported that the producer (Stan Smith) does not have the necessary funds to make the Air Lauderdale Beach Fest happen. The only way he can see the event happening is if a new co-sponsor shows up...and helps fund the shortfall. Smith says that he needs just 'under one million dollars' to make the event happen. Quite a hefty price for such short notice. He's making a plea to anyone out there that can help. The funding can come from one source...or multiple sponsors. There isn't much time, if you want to help...

This development seems to have the community split. While some are wanting the Air Show to return, others are saying the concept is 'outdated' and it's time for it to end. Either way...the beach should think about some kind of event to hold this summer. The events surrounding the Super Bowl this year showed that there can be some great events held on Ft. Lauderdale Beach.
