Bedbugs feasting on travelers…but not in Florida.

Florida may have a 'palmetto bug' run across the floor on occasion, but hey…it's part of living and vacationing in a warm climate. Also, pest-control sprays usually keep those pesky 'palmetto bugs' at bay. Well…the new 'pest' that is creeping people out is the Bed Bug. Once eradicated from most places in the US, some areas are seeing some nasty infestations. These gross bugs hide during the day and come out to feed at night. They love human blood and usually go undetected until you see some bites on your arms or legs. The bugs themselves are quite small. A bug that hasn't fed is about the size of a grain of rice. Once they feed…they can double in size.

Terminex..the pest control company…has released it's 'Top 15 Cities with the worst bed bug infestations'. Here is the list…and there actually no cities in Florida! That means you can rest assured when you come down to visit. Just remember…please do not bring any WITH you.

1. New York
2. Philadelphia
3. Detroit
4. Cincinnati
5. Chicago
6. Denver
7. Columbus, Ohio
8. Dayton, Ohio
9. Washington, D.C.
10. Los Angeles
11. Boston
12. Indianapolis
13. Louisville, Ky.
14. Cleveland
15. Minneapolis, Minn.

Funny you should mention that.  I did see the article today as well.  While they did mention some properties with some 'issues'...Florida is still nowhere near some of the other high tourist areas.  We didn't make the Terminex top 15 list...which is GREAT.  The Sun Sentinel said that bedbugs were foudn in 52 Florida hotels.  While that isn't zero...it's still a very low number when you consider how many hotels we have in the whole state.  NYC has such a problem with these pests that they are seeing them in retail stores and movie theaters.

I do have to agree with the Sun Sentinel article...that Florida is probably on the 'upswing' of the issue.  With so many tourists...it's bound to increase.
