I had posted an entry last week talking about bed bugs and their recent 'resurgance' in the hotel industry. The entry was based on a Terminex list of the top 15 cities with the worst bed bug infestations in the US. NO FLORIDA CITIES made the list. That's the good news. While these bugs are hard to kill…hotels usually have the power to stop the spread and are taking the problem very seriously. The Sun Sentinel's website ran an article a few days after my entry and talked about the bed bug issue in Florida. While it ran on the front page…there really isn't as many cases as you'd think. While it would be great to have zero cases…you are going to have some pop up with all of the hotel/motels in the state. According to the article…if a room in a hotel/motel is found to have bed bugs…it must be sealed off until they are all removed. I also found a database on SunSentinel's website that lists the hotels around the state that have had any reported cases and violations. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation will do a follow-up inspection for any bed bug issue and will not allow the hotel/motel to resell the room until they are all gone. I pulled the list for Broward (Ft. Lauderdale) and Miami-Dade counties so you can see how few there are. The inspectors didn't find any additional bed bugs during their follow-up inspections.
