Food Truck Frenzy gathering hits Ft. Lauderdale.

This past Saturday was Broward's first 'Food Truck Frenzy'. 21 South Florida Gourmet Food Trucks descended on the Maroone Chevrolet from 5PM to 10PM. All the big hitters were there…and if you 'follow' them, you know who they are. The red-hot Gourmet Food Truck is now one of the fastest growing restaurant segments and most have 'rabid' fans. They usually roam the area parking at different locations and often gather together to form a 'food court' environment. This was a really fun event. We got there at about 6:30PM and stayed till about 7:45. We had a game-plan. Sample as many as we could while sharing our selections.

The hard part of attending your first Food Truck event? Choosing what to try. The prices and quantity of food ranges from $2 to $10…with some 'combo' meals for two people even available for a higher cost. You have all kinds of cuisine available here too. Burgers, hot dogs, indian, latin, mexican, sweets, sandwiches, steaks, etc. I can't possibly list them all. We did our best and here are some of our tastings.

The Steak Pancho from Grill Master Café cost around $6. The steak was cooked to medium and had great flavor. There was a sauce drizzled on top…it seemed to have a mustardy taste. It was served with a roll and 2 sweet plantains. We both loved it.

The Spiral potato from the Grill Master Café's annex cart got us excited but seemed to fall flat. They take a fresh potato and spiral cut it on a stick. It's fried fresh and you have a choice of maybe 10 seasonings (maybe even a few more) to choose from. We got the BBQ flavor…which didn't seem to stick to the potato very well and we could hardly taste it. I think this cost around $4. They also had funnel cakes which looked good. How can a fresh funnel cake be bad?

Next we went onto Cheeseme. The menu had everything Cheese (I'm sure you can guess that). We were looking at small tastings so we didn't want a slider or sandwich. We settled on the Mac and Cheese Pancakes. You get 2 for $4. We wondered what it would actually be. Well…they take Mac and Cheese…put it on a grill and flatten it out as it melts and gets brown and crisp on both sides. This was AWESOME! It was so cheesy it didn't disappoint. So simple…but was total comfort.

Next we hit Sakaya Kitchen. The menu had all kinds of Korean goodies. We settled on the Tater Tots with Grilled Short Ribs which I believe was one of the specials for the night. The cost was around $5-$6. The portion was HUGE! They take tater tots and add in a slightly spicy/sweet korean sauce and some scallions. They top that with grilled short ribs. The short ribs were tender and full of flavor. They were grilled and had a nice grilled flavor as well. While we liked the dish a lot…there were way too many tater tots and we didn't went to get too full yet so we didn't finish the portion.

Next on the list was BC Tacos. They had all kinds of tacos on the board. I got the fried Mahi Mahi with cabbage and mozzarella cheese and Jeff ordered the steak, cabbage and cheddar. Both were ordered on a soft taco (all also can come on a hard taco). We both got the hot habanero sauce which they give you on the side. The fish was fresh and while it looks simple…the taco was really good. The habanero sauce wasn't as hot as you would think…but I still liked it. Jeff's steak had nice flavor and he wished the sauce as hotter too. Each taco they sell runs from $2.50 to $3.50.

To top off the tastings…Jeff got a Watermelon Sno Cone. The size shown here was a medium for about $4. He liked it…but it was too big. They should offer a small size. They had all kinds of flavors…even Tiger Blood. I'm not sure of the name of the truck…but he only had frozen sweets.

We ended up getting some mini cupcakes from Sugar Rush to take home. Red Velvet, Pineapple Mango and coconut. They were pretty good. Moist and just enough to get the taste and not feel overly guilty.

Overall this event was really fun. While they don't serve beer…lot of people were just hanging around and made it a gathering event. Hopefully, this event will lead to a lot more for us here in Ft. Lauderdale.
