FTLToday Quik Bite: Village Grille, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

Memorial Day Weekend was picture perfect down in South Florida. That meant the BEACH. We hit Lauderdale-by-the-Sea early and decided to grab some breakfast. There are a few places that service breakfast and we decided on the Village Grille. They didn't open until 8 AM…which seemed kind of late considering that this part of the beach usually is full of early risers.

We chose to sit outside and enjoy the weather. The server was slammed from the start since the outside was full upon them even opening. They did a good job getting our coffee/drinks and taking our order..meaning we didn't have to wait that long. The Breakfast Menu had your typical items. We chose the Breakfast Special with Bacon.

The food wasn't finished ultra fast…but it was relaxing enough being that close to the beach that it didn't really matter. The plate came out with 2 eggs (over hard), 2 pieces of bacon, potatoes and some fruit for garnish/munching.

The eggs appeared to be 'over hard' and actually bordering on overdone. The strange thing was that the yolk was still a bit runny meaning that the grill or pan must have been a little too hot. They were still good eggs though. The bacon was thick and tasted like it was cooked to order. This is rare as most places make stockpiles of bacon early in the morning and keep it warm. It wasn't overdone (not a fan of super crisp bacon) and was nice and smoky. It was also thicker than you usually seem to get at many breakfast joints too. The potatoes looked like the traditional 'home fries' you get…but these didn't have any onions or green peppers. They also tasted like they were not sitting around and had a nice seasoning on them. I actually liked these home fries more than any other breakfast diner I've been to in recent memory. While I'm sure the fruit was mostly for garnish…we both ate ours. It was fresh and sweet…so why not?

Overall, this was a pretty good breakfast. The total bill was $14.84 and that is with a small up charge for a bagel (Jeff ordered it instead of toast) and cream cheese. The breakfast special comes with coffee (or soda) so for being a 'beach' restaurant…it's a good value. I'm only scoring a 'B' due to the eggs. The beach is about a block from the restaurant and you can see the ocean from some of the seats outside.
