FTLToday Quik Bite Roadtrip - Ellie's 50's Diner, Delray Beach FL
On our way up to Palm Beach Gardens, we stopped to grab breakfast at Ellie's 50's Diner on US1 in Delray Beach. Jeff is Mr. Diner and there was no way we could pass by without stopping in and giving it a try. He actually spent time researching online to find a diner between Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach Gardens...and Ellie's was the winner.

(Jeff at the gas pump - Ellie's 50's Diner)
Ellie's is a diner and also a catering company with banquet facilities. Upon driving up to the building...it looks larger then your typical diner and it stands out with lots of pink. From the old 'vintage' car and gas pump outside...to the jukebox and decor inside...there is no question of the 1950's theme here. 50's music plays overhead and the wait-staff is decked out in poodle skirts.
(Old Jukebox...don't think it's really operational anymore)

The menu carries over the 50's theme with 'snappy/cute' names like the "Little Darlin" (2 eggs, bacon, home fries and toast) to the "La Bamba" Omelette (Spanish Omelette). Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served with other typical diner fare (sandwiches, burgers, shakes).
I ordered the 'Little Darlin" and Jeff chose the "La Bamba". Each is served with toast and a 'fruit cup'. The small fruit cup is brought out right away...almost like a small appetizer. The fruit consisted of cantaloupe, honeydew and pineapple. The fruit was fresh and a nice way to start the day, but it's quite small.
(Small fruit cup)
I ordered by eggs over hard and chose bacon as my meat with whole wheat toast. The eggs were over-hard without question. A little too over-hard...but I'm fine with that. The bacon...while you get a nice portion...was too crisp...but didn't seem crisp from being well-done. It seemed crisp from being 'kept warm'. This is the case in many places around South Florida. I guess they don't like to cook bacon to order since it takes too long? The home fries were really good. Not too over seasoned or salted. I liked them. Overall it was a sold breakfast for just over $5.
(Little Darlin' - 2 eggs, meat (bacon), homefries and toast)
Jeff's Spanish Omelette is stuffed with mushrooms, onions, olives, peppers and is topped with a 'zesty sauce'. He chose grits rather than home fries. He LOVED the omelette. He raved on and on about it all day actually. The veggies were fresh and in large chunks which scored lots of points. The sauce on top was a freshly made salsa. He even told the waitress it was the best omelette he'd ever had.

(Ellie's 50's Diner total bill - $18.95 for 2 breakfasts, 2 sodas...not including tip)
Ellie's 50's diner is a great place to grab traditional diner fare with a retro feel. Mom & Dad will love this place even more as I'm sure it will bring back some memories. Stop in and give them a try if you are in Delray. The price for 2 breakfasts was about average and the quality was pretty good.

If you're looking for a REAL diner between Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach Gardens, you should check out Dontee's on Belvedere Road in WPB, or Howley's on US1. They don't need cars and memorabilia, they are simply the real thing.
