FTLToday Quik Bite - Marlee's Diner, Deerfield Beach, FL
I think we've driven by Marlee's Diner in Deerfield Beach 100 times. While we both like diners…we never seemed to make it into this place. We finally stopped in for Breakfast on a Saturday morning. We were greeted and sat right away in a booth by the window. There was counter seating as well as a separate room in back.

Looking around, the restaurant was clean and looked like your 'typical' diner. Some pies were on display…but overall, it looked a little 'empty'. There wasn't really any decorations anywhere…which I found nice in a diner. Too many decorations make for dust collectors, and you don't want that. Our server came right over to take our drink order (we don’t drink coffee at diners). The menu was split into breakfast, lunch and dinner. While there was a large selection…it wasn't one of those 'uber menu' diner places so we found the breakfast section fast. I was going for the 2 eggs with meat breakfast (my usual) and Jeff was eyeing the Spanish Omelette (the menu stated it was served with fleshly made salsa). When ordering…I was happy to be given the choice of 'hash browns' or 'home fries'. I'm not one for home fries really….so I jumped at the chance to get hash browns.

The food came out in about 15 minutes. The server dropped off our plates (which would be the last time we see her in 20 minutes) and we sized up our breakfasts.
My two eggs (over hard) were cooked as ordered and were fresh. The bacon was not crisp and smoky. I prefer bacon to not be too crisp…so this was perfect. Now on to the hash browns. They looked good…brown and crisp on the top. As I took my first bite…I discovered that looks can be deceiving. The inside was totally overdone and mush. I will bet that they keep these hash browns on the grill all during breakfast and only 'flip them over' to crisp the other side. That overcooks them. What a shame..it was almost a perfect breakfast..

Jeff's omelette was made with green peppers, onions and cheese. It was fluffy and everything was fresh. Well…everything except for the 'salsa'. It was definitely not freshly made. I will put money on it being Pace brand found at your local grocery store. Kind of a bad move when you say it's one thing on the menu…and the actual product is nowhere close. His hash browns were overcooked as well.

We finally saw our server and got our check. Total came to $19 without tip. About the standard diner price. But with so many other diners out there….I don't think we will be stopping in at Marlee's anymore. While we were gathering our stuff from the table…I looked around and found most of the servers gossiping with each other in the corner….well…except for one that was involved in an in depth conversation with a customer. Then there was the server fight when we were paying (they were fighting about who should be in the cash drawer or something) .
