FTLToday Quik Bite – Scarfone's Coal Fired Pizza - , Coconut Creek, FL

Moving to a new neighborhood can take some adjusting. So far Coconut Creek is great. Lots of shopping, restaurants and entertainment with easy access to the Turnpike and Sawgrass Expressway. We have been on our search for a local Pizza joint to fill the void of Primanti Brothers in Wilton Manors. Primanti was within walking distance to the old condo and we loved the place. We’ve hit quite a few Pizza spots in the new neighborhood and you will start to see some reviews trickle out.

I’m not a huge fan of the ‘coal fired pizza’ craze that seems to be going on right now. I find some better than others and some very overpriced. There is one in the Promenade Shopping Center on the corner of Wiles and Lyons Road and we called in a carry out order a few weeks ago. The parking at the Promenade can take some getting used to, but this outdoor complex is really cool. There are bars and restaurants and a new movie theater in the works. Scarfone’s Coal Fired Pizza has quite a large dining room and outside patio so you can either take out or dine in. The dining room was very nicely decorated and looked a bit more ‘upscale’ than your corner pizza place.

We ordered the Fried Mozzarella Appetizer and a Sausage Pizza with Sweet Peppers and onions. The order was ready quite fast and we didn’t even have to wait once we got there.

The Mozzarella was large chunks and while it cooled some, was quite good. The sauce for dipping was the perfect amount of tang to sweet and we dipped away. This would be a much better appetizer if you dined in and it was hot.

The Pizza looked very good and we dove in. The crust was thin and a slight chew with some crisp spots. You could see the dark spots as most coal fired pizza has but this one wasn’t taken to the ‘overcooked’ point. The toppings were great and overall we liked the pizza. It had cooled a bit on the way home and was still really good. The cheese on the pizza is ‘fresh’ and more dotted so you will not get cheese on every bite. If you are used to those chain pizzas this will be an adjustment. We had a few pieces the next day and found this type of pizza didn’t really hold up to left overs.

Bottom line? We liked the food and service and will return. We might eat in rather than carry out though. The price isn’t that bad for being one of those coal fired places either. This isn’t the best pizza spot we found in the area, but a good choice for something different.
