The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. recently opened in Coral Springs and we headed over to give them a review. Located on University Drive in the heart of Coral Spring’s ‘restaurant row’, you can count on a crowd during peak hours. We arrived on a Sunday between 10-11 AM and the place was humming with hungry customers. So did we think the Brooklyn water flown in makes a difference in the overall bagel experience?
The restaurant is set up a bit different than you’d expect. The main entrance is set-up like a ride at an amusement park. With twists and turns in the line along display cases and windows, you can’t see the cashiers from the end of the line. But you can see the famous “water” used to make the bagels. Today, the line was almost to the front door, so Jeff waited and I grabbed a table. There are lots of booths, but they fill up quick as well as the tables outside.
They seemed to manage the line well and even pulled out customers that were just looking to buy bagels ‘to-go’ to speed things up. As the line inched up and Jeff approached the ‘corner’ that turns the line to the right, I could see his disappointment as there was still plenty of line to go. We got to study the menu while waiting and it covered all of the basics. Breakfast means bagel sandwiches with egg and meats, smoked salmon and deli meats. You can also order an omelet with your choice of side and any bagel you want. Ordering was smooth and they give you a number to display on your table so they can bring your food directly to you.
The coffee section is unique and hot and ice coffee is on ‘tap’. Now if they only had Funky Buddha Hop Gun! The wait for our food wasn’t too long, maybe 15-20 minutes and they drop off everything you need.
Bacon Omelet with American Cheese, Waffle Fries and Asiago Bagel ($7.29). The portions were LARGER than expected and this was actually a very tasty omelet. The inside was full of cheese and there was just enough bacon to give it a nice smoky/salty flavor. The waffle fries were tasty, but not as warm as we’d like. The bagel was lightly toasted and was a little ‘yellow’ in color. At first I thought they brought me an egg bagel, but it did have a nice Asiago flavor. There was a slight chew and thought it was a pretty solid bagel. We also liked the size as it wasn’t too large or too small.
Protein Omelet with Home Fries and Asiago Bagel ($7.99). This omelet comes with chicken, mushrooms, spinach and Swiss cheese. The overall flavor was good, but it seemed like it was missing something. While it might be on the ‘healthier’ side, we felt it needed more cheese as well. The home fries were good and only needed a light dusting of salt to round out the flavor.
We really liked our breakfast at The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. and would definitely return. We didn’t find the bagels to be the best we’ve ever had, but they were quite good. They do rival the other large chains in the area and we found that breakfast is a great value. Just bring your patience and be prepared to wait in line or maybe choose to go at an off-time to beat the rush.
