The Cold Stone Creamery sign was almost screaming our name as we sat on the bench across the street.  Now we really didn’t need the extra calories since we just finished at Red Rock Restaurant.  But we’ve eaten now at almost every restaurant in The Promenade, except for this ice cream shop.  So that was my excuse for dessert tonight.

Cold Stone Creamery

This was our first time at this Cold Stone Creamery location in the Promenade at Coconut Creek.  It was a little busy tonight, as most ice cream shops are on a Friday night.  The concept is simple – either pick a specialty combination of flavored ice cream and mix-ins….or create your own concoction. Once you place your order, the magic starts.  In a chilled slab, the ice cream artist mixes in your selections. Since the slab is chilled, it prevents the ice cream from melting. It’s like creating your own custom ice cream flavor, very cool.

We chose not to go the pick your own route as the price can add up. You get one or two mix-ins for free but after that, there is a charge. I chose the Apple Pie a la Cold Stone and Jeff picked the Birthday Cake Remix.  You can get it in a cup, a cone or a waffle bowl…plain or chocolate dipped. We opted for the plain cup.

Watching them mix your ice cream is actually kind of fun.  These guys are good and fast!  It was hard to snap a few picks but I got a couple and even a short video. They pack the ice cream into the cup and send you on your way.

There are some seats inside which fill up fast.  They don’t have any outside benches, so we made your way to the small wall on the other side of the street which worked out just fine. Jeff’s Birthday Cake Remix had Ingredients: Cake Batter Ice Cream® with Rainbow Sprinkles, Brownie and Fudge.  The first few bites he liked, but after that it became a little too rich and sweet. The brownie and Birthday Cake flavored ice cream was just a little too much.

My Apple Pie a la Cold Stone was good, but the apple filling was a little inconsistent which mellowed out the apple flavor too much. I probably would have been happy with half of the amount in the serving.

Cold Stone Creamery
Cold Stone Creamery is a chain and we think it’s pretty consistent. While there are few other local Mom & Pop ice cream shops we enjoy a lot more, Cold Stone is a good spot if you are near the Promenade and have a sweet tooth craving.

Cold Stone Creamery is located at   4425 Lyons Rd F105, Coconut Creek, FL.

Yes, I’ve ordered the Birthday Cake flavor once and never again for the same reasons. The first few bites are great and then beyond that it’s too much. I usually order a kids size which is the perfect amount. If you go again and like chocolate, get the Willie Wonka. 🙂

Great tip about ordering a kid size.
