We’ve been to the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store & Restaurant in Deerfield Beach a few times and figured it’s time to do a breakfast review.  Located off of I-95 and SW10th Street, it seems like an odd location, but it works well for them.  It’s the only Cracker Barrel that we know of for miles.

The building looks like all other Cracker Barrel Restaurants with the large front porch with rocking chairs.  These chairs serve double duty as a place to wait for your table and they are also for sale. This place can get crazy busy, but we were lucky and we didn’t have a wait.   We zipped past the country store in the front (they make you walk through to get to the restaurant) and figured we’d look around on the way out.  The country theme is carried out into the dining room.  It looks like an old country cabin of sorts with a large fireplace and wood tables and paneling.

The old signs and wall hangings are fun to look at while you wait and play the Peg Game at the table. According to the Cracker Barrel website, they’ve made over 10,000,000 of these games.

Our server was over quickly to take drink orders.  We needed some time to look over the menu as it’s quite large.  This is the place to go when you want to over-exceed your calorie intake for breakfast.  The portions are big and the choices are all true country recipes.  Multiple sausages, hams and ‘side dishes’ make sure you do not leave hungry.  Our orders were placed and the food came out in maybe 20-25 minutes.

Double Meat Pancake Breakfast ($7.89) – Thick-sliced hickory-smoked bacon, smoked sausage patties (turkey sausage or turkey bacon) with two buttermilk pancakes, 100% pure natural syrup and two grade A eggs.  This is a massive quantity of food.  Our server double checked to see if I wanted any different variety of meats, sweet or salty ham or just stick with what’s listed on the menu.  Nice touch and a sign of a good server.  I stuck to the menu.

The bacon here is some of the best you can find at a chain restaurant.  Thick and smoky it’s one of my favorites.  The sausage was ‘ok’ but we found that the smokiness made it taste ‘odd’.  We would have liked the regular sausage patties instead.  The eggs were cooked to order (over medium), but I realized that there is no toast to sop up the yolk (the carb is the pancakes).  The pancakes were fluffy and a little crisp on the edges, my favorite kind.  The 100% pure natural syrup comes in a small bottle and you wonder if they are trying to trick you into thinking its pure maple syrup.  It’s actually a maple syrup blend and tasted pretty good. I probably couldn’t tell the difference anyway.

Sunrise Sampler ($7.99) – Two eggs, grits, sawmill gravy, homemade buttermilk biscuits, real butter.  PLUS (yes there is more) fried apples and hash-brown casserole AND (we are still not done!) a sampling of smoked sausage, country ham and thick-sliced bacon.  WOW!  This was a lot of food and it’s just for one person.  It’s a good option if you want to share too and Jeff didn’t even come close to finishing the whole thing.  The sawmill gravy was a bit bland and we noticed that it’s not sausage gravy.  It needed something to elevate the flavor and he didn’t eat much of it.

The grits were fresh, but needed sugar (that’s how he eats them) and the biscuits were freshly made.  The hash-brown casserole was one of our favorites on the plate and is a must when you come here.  It’s a cheesy potato mixture that is just so comforting.  The fried apples are also tasty, seasoned with just the right amount of cinnamon.  Jeff chose the salt cured ham and while it was a little tough, we both liked it.

We liked our server and felt it was probably the best service we’ve had at this Cracker Barrel.  She managed to keep our drinks full and always checked on us.  Her attention to detail when we ordered was great and not always easy to find.  The prices are actually quite low for the quantity of food you get here and it’s a good place to visit when you want to make breakfast you main meal.  We were not hungry until well past dinner time.

You pay your bill in the ‘country store’ area and we can spot a marketing tactic a mile away.  You can’t help but to take a walk around the store and see what crazy things they have.  Parents will want to be prepared for the kids to zero in on something they want and it will be hard to say no. Especially after playing with the Peg Game on the table, which is also conveniently available for purchase

We LOVE Cracker Barrel! It always reminds me of being on vacation. You are very right about the gift shop, too. Kids will be begging to buy things. 😉
