Duffy’s Sports Grill is a popular local chain of casual restaurants that has quite the loyal following. Weekends always seem to be very busy at the Duffy’s Sports Bar in Coconut Creek, so that meant trying to arrive a bit early on a recent Friday evening. We arrived a little after 5:30 PM and missed the usual line out the door and got seated immediately. The outside bar and seating area was quite busy with customers taking advantage of the ‘happy hour all day, every day’ special and inside was filling up fast with early diners.
People with ADD will love this place because of the multiple televisions you can see without having to turn your head. The inside dining space has a large counter seating bar and booths range in size with some seating two and others seating up to 6 (possibly more). They also have some high-top tables and regular tables along the windows. We’ve always noticed that when the dining room is full, the noise level can be a bit on the loud side but we seemed to adjust. We were there just in time to see the main lights dimmed for evening hours, so we had to really work at getting our pictures just right.
We love that the menu here at Duffy’s Sports Grill has healthy options. The little ‘heart’ symbol means that when ordered with two green vegetables, the calorie count is less than 540 calories. It’s more of a guide to help you eat a bit lighter if you choose, but also means you can splurge on an appetizer, drinks or dessert. Our server used the ‘I’m going to remember your order and not write it down’ trick and it was flawless. He never missed a beat and even asked about additional customizations along the way and everything came out exactly as ordered.
Side Salad ($1.59 with entrée) – The menu stated that the salad was $3.99 when added to an entrée, but who are we to argue with a $2 discount. The lettuce was fresh and we liked the mix of iceberg and romaine with a few leaves of arugula thrown in as well. The tomato and cucumber were fresh and we liked the addition of shredded cheese. The croutons were more like ‘store bought’ and flat tasting, but the balsamic vinaigrette dressing made up for that.
Atlantic salmon, grilled ($15.99) – The salmon entrée is noted as a ‘lower calorie item’, but I went over with the baked potato with butter and sour cream. The salmon was fresh and cooked perfectly. The moist, flavorful salmon was very flaky and definitely something I would order again. The broccoli was fresh and steamed making it a healthier choice saving some calories for the second side item. The baked potato was the comfort piece of the dish and what’s not to like when there is butter and sour cream involved?
Wedge Salad ($1.59 with entrée) – It looks like we got another deal on this salad with a lower than posted price. We found the lettuce was fresh, but it wasn’t as tight of a wedge as we like to see. The blue cheese dressing and bacon really took this over the top and made it well worth the additional add on charge.
Maryland Crab Cakes ($16.99) – Made with rich, buttery Blue Crab Meat, we felt the flavor was a bit too mild. While we did see crab, it was blended a bit too well with the filler and reminded us more of a large crab hush-puppy. A crunchy outside and mushy inside crab hush puppy. The zucchini side was steamed and lightly seasoned and a perfect choice with a little lemon. The baked potato was just as good on this dish as the one that came with the salmon.
Our server kept up on drink refills and also was perfect on the pace of service leaving us very impressed. One thing to note is that you MUST sign up for the Duffy’s MVP program. It’s free and you earn points that count toward cash discounts that add up quickly. The points are based on your total bill amount and we’ve easily gotten a few $10 discounts over the years. We also hear that they might give priority seating to MVP members during peak hours too. Another item worth mentioning is the fried mushroom appetizer. While we didn’t splurge on this trip, we usually always order this and it’s easily one of the best versions around. Lastly, the happy hour is amazing and the slogan is ‘Happy Hour Every Day, All Day’. How can you beat that?
