***UPDATE – The restaurant is CLOSED****
Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill is a new fast casual restaurant franchise in Boca Raton with a great concept, but needs some tweaks to stay ahead of the others.
We stopped into Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill for lunch and from the outside, looked very promising. Inside, the colors are bold and do make you think of ‘fresh food’ while still feeling comfortable. It was clean and overall did feel comfortable.
It’s a new restaurant and set up almost like Chipotle with a similar ordering process.
They menu is Mediterranean with grilled chicken, gyro and steak that can be added to a number of salads and wraps. The menu is easy to follow and they guys helped us through the ordering process and it went quickly.
I ordered the Mediterranean Cobb Salad and added grilled chicken. It’s romaine lettuce with an olive tapenade, hard boiled eggs, roasted red peppers, feta cheese, red onion and a dressing of your choice along with a pita. You can also customize it if there is anything on the list you do not like. The toppings were fresh and we liked the olive tapenade which added a nice saltiness. The chicken was spiced well and was tender and we also liked the fresh hot pita that was served on the side. The bowl size looked large, but it was shallow making it a smaller than expected portion for the money.
Jeff ordered the Greek Salad with Gyro meat. This salad seemed to take a while for them to make since it’s mixed and kind of copped to order. I warned Jeff not to get the gyro meat as I saw the picture on the wall and it was square, precut and not shaved off of the gyro roll. We hate that. Gyro should be off a vertical broiler. On the salad it looked grey and unappealing and tasted a bit bland. But then, we also noticed something that wasn’t supposed to be in the salad, a very long hair. Yuck.
The Manger immediately apologized and remade the salad and that gave Jeff the opportunity to switch to chicken. The Manager also gave us a buy one get one coupon for the trouble. We know this stuff happens sometimes (and usually to Jeff LOL) and the manager handled it perfectly, kudos to him. The replacement salad was actually quite good and the spicy dressing Jeff picked had quite the kick. The cucumbers and tomatoes were seeded and chopped into little cubes which we liked a lot.
Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill is a promising concept and has a chance to do well in this location. The portions of the salads could be a bit larger and that could make the prices fall in line a little more for us. The food was fresh, but we do suggest sticking with the chicken if you are getting meat added to any dish.
