You know it’s never a good sign when one of us starts eating and says “I hope we don’t get sick .” We love jerk chicken, but Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill Restaurant in Coconut Creek missed the mark. And food temperature was another factor here. Located in at the corner of Lyons Rd and Coconut Creek Parkway in the Publix shopping center, this was our second visit to this Golden Krust location.
They’re a chain of fast-casual Caribbean cuisine restaurants with a concentration of locations in West Broward. We had a taste for jerk chicken and a few patties and stopped in. The restaurant has quite a few tables and some stools for counter seating facing the back side wall. The colors are bright yellow, blue and some red splashed in. Caribbean music was playing and there were a few customers eating at the counter behind us.
The menu is on the wall to the right when you walk in and has some items like ox tail, jerk chicken and chicken curry. We knew we wanted jerk chicken so ordered the large meal that came with rice and beans with a little cabbage on top. We also ordered extra sides of one curry and one cheese patty.
The counter service was friendly and helpful. Most of the sauce based entrees and sides were held in the warming bins at the front of the counter. The jerk chicken was being kept warm (or so we thought) in a separate warming display case. They boxed up our order and added some of the ox tail gravy on the rice for us and we were sent on our way (we ordered the food to-go).
We live fairly close…maybe five minutes by car and plated up the food. Unfortunately, the chicken, rice and plantains were all cold at this point. We took turns using the microwave to heat up the food and took our first bites.
Jerk chicken: The jerk chicken was a bit milder than expected. The chicken was hacked up pretty good and the only pieces we could identify was a chicken leg. The white meat was a little on the dry side and overall it missed the mark for us. The salad/cabbage on the top had zero flavor.
Rice and Beans: A little on the salty side and didn’t really have much other flavor. It was a bit dried out, maybe due to it sitting a bit too long at the restaurant?
Plantains: They were dry and tough and we couldn’t get past the first small bite.
Curry Patty: This was still warm! I guess the heat lamps are stronger in the patty warming box. The crust was a bit tough, but it did have a nice curry flavor. The filling was a bit sparse.
Cheese Patty: This one was also warm. The only two bright spots of the whole meal. The flavor was ok…but probably kept in the warmer too long as the filling was a bit dry.
Overall we were not really happy with our meal at Golden Krust Caribbean restaurant. The food temperature seems to be an issue here and that alone is a reason to second guess a restaurant. A five minute car ride should not result in a cold item unless it’s a salad. Next time, we may try their frozen patties available in supermarket. But for now, we’re not retuning to this Golden Krust restaurant location.
