Thumbs up on the pastry – Thumbs down on the coffee.  Jeff seems to be on this constant quest for the best coffee around.  His favorite seems to lean to the Cuban variety, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to try every little ‘Mom & Pop’ Latin spot we drive past.  Today’s quest brought us to La Union Mexican Bakery in Coral Springs.  Located in a modest strip mall (the strip mall itself needs a face lift), they have a modest storefront that looks very welcoming and they are probably the bright spot on the block.

Walking in there is no mistake that this is quite the Mom & Pop, Mexican establishment…or maybe a pizza joint.  The windows still had “Pizza supreme” etching on them.  The colors are bold and there are lots of Mexican memorabilia bringing a little (cluttered) personality into the space.  While it’s not that large, they do have more seating than expected and they manage to utilize the space well.

The bakery section is located all long the back wall.  You pick up your tongs  and tray (or bag/box) and go through and pick your items from the bins/shelves.  We are not too familiar with the rolls and pastries so we just had to go on our instincts here.

You then make your way to the counter where you can order coffee/espresso and hot food items.  Since we already had breakfast, we’ll have to come back to try the food on another visit.  It looked authentic and the portions were quite large.  From the tables around us, you could definitely tell the hot food was made in house.

The customer base was largely Latin and everyone was friendly and did speak English when we indicated we didn’t speak Spanish well (or hardly at all).  The espresso drinks here are not made with the typical coffee machines you typically see in other Mom & Pop café’s around.  I believe they used the Nescafe pods.  Press a button, walk away until it’s done, then hand it to the customer.  Jeff wasn’t too happy to see that, but I’m sure the owners want to spend more time making bakery items and food rather than coffee and espresso.

The pastries we picked were really good and fresh.  They were kind of ‘sweet rolls’ and hit the spot.  La Union Mexican Bakery is a great spot to grab a pasty and we will be back to try the tacos.
