It’s always nice to revisit a restaurant we’ve already reviewed and find they’ve improved in both service and food. Today, we returned for breakfast to Marlee’s Diner in Deerfield Beach. Back in 2011, we only gave them a “C” rating and they’ve definitely moved up in their grade with today’s visit.
Marlee’s Diner is located on Federal Highway just north of Fort Lauderdale. Like three years ago, we were immediately greeted and seated at a nice window booth. Like a typical diner, they also have about a dozen seats along the counter facing the kitchen and an overflow room in back for additional seating and larger parties.
Once seated, my favorite question to ask our wait staff “What’s Good?”. Their response typically tells me if they familiar the food they’re serving or have any daily specials. Most of the time, I’ll order something they suggest or have them help me pick between two dishes. On the flip side, a pet peeve of mine is when I get a reply that they don’t know or it depends what I like. Today, our waitress (Debra) immediately responded with several of their specials, a few that sounder really good. Our review was off to a good start.
Since we’re doing a revisit, I had already decided to re-order the same thing as my previous visit – the Festiva omelet. But I found they’d updated the menu and it’s now called a Spanish omelet with salsa. To me, this was just as good. Mark ordered his usual eggs, bacon and hash browns.
Spanish omelet, toast, hash browns and salsa ($9.95) – Good choice. The omelet was well cooked, with lots of green pepper and onions and the cheddar cheese was both folded inside and melted on top. Last review, I was disappointed with what they described as “home-made” salsa, which looked and tasted very much like Ortega brand from Publix. Today’s salsa was better and they removed the “home-made” wording from the menu. The hash browns were just the way I like them – crunchy on the outside and soft inside.
Stefen’s Special – Two eggs, two bacon, hash browns and toast ($7.45). The over medium eggs were also cooked perfectly, but the bacon was the star of his plate. Thick cut bacon with lots of flavor and not over done. If this was a buffet, we’d make a second trip just for a plate of bacon. Mark also ordered diet Coke ($2.00) which they refilled once.
All-in-all, breakfast was a little over $20, which is about average bill for two for a breakfast in Fort Lauderdale . The service was good in the beginning, but the waitress disappeared once the food was delivered. The food was much better this visit. Will we return? Absolutely.
Marlee’s Diner is located at 699 S. Federal Highway in Deerfield Beach Florida.
