We’ve heard a lot about The Mellow Mushroom and since they will be opening a new location in Downtown Fort Lauderdale soon, wanted to checkout their Delray Beach location. We found a funky spot with a huge craft beer selection and good service to top off some really good food.
The large outside patio looked quite roomy, but we wanted to dine inside. The hippie theme is balanced well with lots of colors and stuff on the walls from that time era. We found it a very interesting look without being ‘over the top’.
They have a large bar to the left when you walk in with a large variety of craft beers on tap. I’ve actually head that The Mellow Mushroom was one of the first restaurants in the area to offer such a wide variety, so we might have them to thank for the others that have popped up. There are some large booths and tables through the dining area with plenty of TV’s which happened to be showing football.
We were greeted by our server right away and we needed a few minutes to pick out the perfect beer. When she returned, we were impressed on how knowledgeable she was on all of the beers on tap. She even suggested the Pumpkin Ale beer glass rimmed with cinnamon and sugar. Beers arrived quickly and Jeff was very happy with the server’s suggestion. (Really never seen a grown man lick the outside of his beer glass before today).
The menu spotlights pizza’s with a good amount of appetizers to share. They also had a salad section for the lighter eater with a calzone and hoagie section as well. We chose to split a few items and when ordered, the server asked if we wanted them out in any particular order or all at once. Again, a very good sign of a good server. Food was timed perfectly and didn’t take too long to arrive.
Oven Roasted Wings ($5.99) – Crisp double-baked wings. Choose from hot, mild, bbq, jerk, sweet Thai chili or naked. Served with your choice of ranch or bleu cheese dressing and celery. We opted for the small order (5 pieces) with jerk seasoning. They were larger than expected and so fresh. They were actually some of the best quality wings we’ve had in a while and really liked the jerk seasoning. Jeff said that the jerk spice could have been a bit more heat, but it was just fine for me.
Bayou Bleu ($14.49) – Spicy bleu cheese base topped with all natural grilled shrimp and Andouille sausage covered in mozzarella cheese and garnished with chives. We chose the small size (4 pieces) to share and it was actually just the right size for us. Hot out of the oven, we dug right in. The shrimp was really flavorful and the perfect texture. I actually thought it was better quality shrimp than we’ve had at some seafood restaurants.
The Andouille sausage was a perfect combination for this pizza too, just the right amount of spiciness. We did find that the bleu cheese flavor was a bit milder than expected, but the cheese overall was plentiful and we didn’t mind since it tasted so good. The crust was amazing. The perfect crisp on the outside and just the right amount of ‘chew’.
We really liked our visit to The Mellow Mushroom and would make this one of our regular spots. The food was fresh and packed with flavor and the service was top notch. The craft beer selection rivals any other tap house out there and we liked the casual laid back feel.
