On a recent visit to Fruitland in Central Florida, just east of The Villages, we found an “adult” ice cream parlor called Mystic Ice Cream.  Normally, we both wouldn’t be that excited about driving out of town for ice cream until we heard their flavors are liquor infused.

Mystic Ice Cream might seem a bit ‘tucked away’ in an out of the way location today, but just wait a year.  The Villages keeps expanding and new development has already started very close by.

When we arrived, we found some outside seating, but it was a bit too cool so we ventured inside.  As soon as we walked in the front door, it was a visual delight.  We discovered a fun, funky and cool dining area that immediately made us think of the set of “Friends”.  The eclectic furniture included vintage sofas, brightly painted tables and classic board games and books everywhere.

The charm is nothing really matched but it all goes together very well. The walls are covered with old albums and everything Pop Culture from the Beatles to Seinfeld.  I’ve really never seen so many Lava lamps in one room.  Other psychedelic memorabilia dot the room to make every generation feel included.

The ordering counter is right at the front entrance with the menu on poster boards behind you.  An impressive list of over 35 flavors.  Rum, vodka and Kahlua are some of the liquors used in really creative options.

Once you choose your flavor, you need to choose if you want it in a bowl (and the size), cone or shake.  Ordering went quick and the workers were very friendly and attentive.

They do have a loyalty program which allows you a spin a prize wheel after 8 punches (purchases).  We were well on our way to a spin and to have our picture added to the wall!

Kahlua Fudge cup – Bold, Dark Kahlua, thick homemade fudge.  This was loaded with Kahlua and there was no way to miss that this had alcohol.  The chocolate and Kahlua was the perfect combination without being too sweet.  The fudge was a nice chocolate punch that helped cut the alcohol a bit and the pretzel was nice and salty and we all liked the mini waffle cone bowl that was at the bottom.

Cherry Heaven cup – Bold Dark Cherry Liquor with red and dark cherries.  This is a cherry lover’s dream.  Loaded with cherry flavor and lots of liquor, you should only get a small if you have to drive.  The cherry flavor was rich and the ice cream was very smooth.  Three of us got this flavor and everyone loved it.

Mystic Ice Cream is only open 6pm to 10 pm Tuesday through Sunday and Karaoke night was just starting as we were leaving, so next time we’ll arrive a little later. We really liked Mystic Ice Cream and see why they bill themselves as ‘The Adult Frozen Dessert’.  This concept is genius and we are still trying to figure out why more places like this are not popping up in South Florida.  They also have a coffee bar in back.  It’s a great spot to hang out with friends and family and enjoy some fresh ‘spiked’ ice cream (or virgin).  Hats off to the owners for bringing Mystic Ice Cream to The Villages area and we think they will do very well here.
