One of the most interesting ethnic markets in Broward County has got to be New York Mart, an Asian market in Sunrise, FL. Every trip to this unique market is like taking a trip to Asia, with no passport required.
Don’t expect New York Mart – Asian Market to be like your neighborhood Publix. Part of the fun is to be transported to another place and New York Mart does just that. At the beginning of the store, you find the “freshest” seafood section in Broward. It’s the freshest because most of what’s in front of you is still alive.
Fish swimming in tanks, crabs lined up with their arms and claws bound and turtles looking up at you from boxes on the floor in boxes like it was a petting zoo. You can find your regular Florida fish varieties here along with all kinds of squid, turtle and jellyfish species.
There are things we’ve never seen and it almost makes you feel as if you are at Sea World. Well, an alternate version of Sea World, where everything is for sale to eat and cook at home.
The meat counter has all the staples you know, with some added Asian cuts that you might never have seen as well. The freezer section carries all kinds of dumplings, dim sum and appetizers too. At this point Mark and I realized we had more items that could possibly fit in our freezer and had to put have the items back. We’ll pick them up on our next visit.
Are you a fan or ramen noodles? Well they have a whole aisle of all different brands and flavors to get your sodium fix.
The fresh vegetable section is amazing. We wonder where they get some of the varieties…it’s almost like they are from another planet. We kept it simple and found some of the lowest prices around for fresh ginger and radishes. We saw some string beans that were two feet long!
Tucked away in the front corner is Chatime Tea where you can get custom hot and cold teas and drinks. I was torn between the grapefruit or passion fruit tea, but the clerk said definitely the passion fruit. When asked if I wanted “pearls”? Of course I said Yes, but really didn’t know exactly what he meant.
The pearls are gigantic tapioca balls. I thought it was odd that the straw was as large as your finger, but then realized with the first sip that the pearls fit in the straw. The purple pearls themselves did not give much flavor. They were like chewy unsweetened gummy bear.
We definitely recommend checking out New York Mart – Asian Market and we bet you will not walk out without buying something and probably learning a thing or two. Oh yeah, and you know the ducks you see handing in the windows in Chinatown? Yes, they have them here too.
