Today my co-worker Chris had a BOGO (Buy One Get One free) coupon for Red’s Backwoods BBQ restaurant in Boca Raton so we headed over for lunch. It seems Red’s is always offering BOGO specials and coupons and after today’s lunch we think we know why.
Red’s Backwoods BBQ is located in a strip mall that is currently under renovation. There is a fence blocking most of the sidewalk off so that a bobcat bulldozer was working at ripping up part of the sidewalk. Kind of a mess, but you are able to get into the place.
The inside is your typical BBQ restaurant with lots of woodsy and country stuff on the walls. It looked clean, which is a good way to start and our server was over quickly with menus and took our drink order. Red’s Backwoods BBQ menu has sandwiches and platters with some salad options as well. BBQ meats come mostly in pulled and off the bone varieties, but there are also rack of ribs for those that like to rough it.
We both chose the sampler platter that comes with four boneless meats and two sides. Both Chris and I went for the mac & cheese for one side, for the other, he went for collard greens and I chose coleslaw. While we waited, we looked over the large variety of BBQ sauce on the table. They have a huge variety that seems to fit every taste from spicy to mild and from sweet to vinegar. We also noticed that if you check in on Facebook, you get a free beer. Dang, if only we were not working today.
Our food took maybe 15 minutes to come out of the kitchen. I’ll try to break down each component of the platter:
The pulled pork had a strange consistency and was overly salty. I actually didn’t taste much except for the salt and you really needed a sauce to make work. This was probably my least favorite of the meats. The pulled chicken was shredded nicely with some larger pieces, but this meat was also overly salty. More BBQ sauce was needed on this meat.
The beef brisket was sliced and very tough with some dried out ends. This is not how brisket should be a BBQ spot. The flavor was faint and it reminded me of left over pot roast that someone overcooked. Unfortunately, the sauce didn’t help this meat at all.
The ribs off the bone were actually the bright spot of the meal. There were large chunks that had a nice chew and they did have the most BBQ flavor out of all the other meats. This made me wish I had ordered the ribs instead of this sampler platter. I didn’t even use much sauce on these, they didn’t really need too much.
The sides were all quite bland and there isn’t one that we would order again. The mac & cheese was probably the best of the three, but it was very ‘cafeteria’ and dried out on the top like they were sitting under a lamp for a while.
The coleslaw was the most bland I’ve ever had and just tasted like plain cabbage.
Chris said the collard greens lacked flavor as well and needed something to kick them up a notch.
The service was actually quite good but we now see why Red’s Backwoods BBQ is always offering coupons. The food isn’t really worth the full price charged – The BOGO makes it better. If we do ever get to go back, I’m trying the bone on ribs and only sticking to deep fried sides. That might be the better choice.
