We love taking trips to Las Vegas. The city has transformed into quite the foodie Mecca and we always find the best places to try. While that’s always our main focus, it’s great to escape the hustle of The Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Fremont Street. Not many people know about our little secret amazing spot – Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Just minutes from The Las Vegas Strip sits a quiet and beautiful nature preserve with some of the most amazing red rock formations around. Visiting Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a must, especially for those tourists from the Eastern United States. The terrain is so unique that it almost makes you feel you are on a different planet.

The drive up to Red Rock Canyon is actually fun as well. You get to see some areas of Las Vegas that give you a feel for the area. Lots of shopping and restaurants along the way make for good pit stops and you shouldn’t miss the Red Rock Casino near the park’s entrance. It’s one of the nicest ‘local casinos’ that rivals many on The Strip.
The cost to enter the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is quite low at $7 per car. The entrance give you access to the 13 mile scenic drive with all kinds of hiking and observation areas.

The Visitor Center is open everyday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and offers a lot of information about the area. Kids will love it as there are all kinds of interactive areas that teach as well as entertain.

The drive is beautiful and can be as short or as long as you wish. We did a bit of hiking and you find out quickly on how out of shape you really are. Jeff was a lot more adventurous than I was and was doubt a lot more climbing.

There are cool historic elements too like pictographs from the Native American Tribes that inhabited the area long ago.

While they have some beginner trails, many are for more experienced hikers so be sure you bring lots of water. This is, after all, the desert and the trails can be a lot longer than you think.
