Who doesn’t like good BBQ, right?   Some think it’s a rare find in South Florida, but lately we have to disagree.  Our visit to Smoke BBQ Restaurant in Delray Beach scored another BBQ hit with us and we’re already planning a return visit.  The Executive Chef and Pit Master of Smoke BBQ, Bryan Tyrell, knows his craft well and has the awards to prove it.  Smoke BBQ has only been open since September 2014 and they are already on some of the ‘must dining lists’ around South Florida.  Including ours.

Patio dining is available with some lounge areas directly out front, complete with a friendly metal pig to greet you.  We chose to dine inside and loved the casual feel and couldn’t ignore the awesome smoke aroma that filled the air.

Large screen TV’s allow for viewing at almost any seat and the wood and natural rustic look felt very comfortable.  There are plenty of areas for large parties as well as smaller groups and the bar allows for solo diners to feel comfortable.  We arrived for lunch on a Saturday and since most diners were sitting on the patio, we had our pick of tables.

Our server was over quickly and informed us that is was ‘happy hour’.  We really were not in the mood for beers (shocker, right??) but we were excited to hear that during happy hour, appetizers are half price!  We then were told that during lunch they offer a $10 special which includes a sandwich, side item and a soft drink.  We chose our appetizer and sandwiches and settled in.  One thing to note is that the shrimp appetizer is not included in the happy hour specials and Sunday’s happy hour doesn’t include any appetizer specials.

Applewood Smoked Chicken Wings ($12 full price, $6 happy hour) – Limited availability, choice of dry rub or buffalo style.  Simply stated, these wings were amazing.  Not only were they larger than expected, but the smoky flavor really brought them to another level.  The house-made buffalo sauce was a great accent and we had requested it to be put on the side.  The blue cheese dressing, while not house made, was thick and tasted great.  This was one great value and even at full price is a must.

16-Hour Beef Brisket Sandwich Special ($10) – House-smoked beef brisket on a roll with one side and a soft drink.  The brisket was picture perfect, with a nice smoke ring and was so tender.  The smoky flavor was balanced well and the house made sauces made each bite unique.  I personally liked the St. Louis style sauce, which is more sweet than vinegary.  The portion of beef was large and it made the potato roll look quite small in comparison.  We liked the use of the potato roll, but the real star is the meat.  I had ordered seasoned fries as my side and the server mentioned these were a ‘new type’ of fry they were testing.  I had to break the news to him that I really didn’t care for them.  They were the coated seasoned fry that most hotels seem to use and just were too salty.  It almost takes away from the great BBQ on the plate and I would have been much happier with regular crinkle fries.

Oink and Moo Sandwich Special ($10) – House made pulled pork and Chopped Brisket sautéed in BBQ sauce on a roll with one side and a soft drink.  The pork was tender and not dry and also had a nice smoky flavor.  The brisket was just as good on this sandwich and we liked the portion size as well.  There was a lot of BBQ sauce already on the sandwich and it was difficult to experiment with the different sauces on the table, but Jeff managed to give it a go.  He liked the mustard/vinegar Carolina style.  The tater tots were just as you remembered as a kid and the better choice over the ‘new fries’.

We both enjoyed our lunch at Smoke BBQ Restaurant and have to say it’s on the top of our ‘must visit’ lists in Delray Beach.  You can’t beat the $10 lunch specials and the happy hour deals, but we also thought the regular prices were quite reasonable.  Service was quick, friendly and efficient with only a slight mix-up on the final bill, which was quickly corrected.  The next time we visit, you can bet we will be trying the St. Louis Ribs and the Brussel sprouts.
