What do you do when you fly out of Fort Lauderdale and have a layover at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport? Well if you are FTLToday, you eat at some local restaurant favorites! On a recent trip we were wondering where to eat in the Atlanta airport and came across The Varsity, a regional restaurant famous for its comfort food like burgers and hot dogs with chili. We couldn’t pass this one buy without stopping for a snack.
While this airport terminal location is not like The Varsity restaurant original location in Atlanta (no drive-in here), the menu offers the same favorites that have been around since 1928. The fast casual counter is simple and offers burgers, hot dogs, onion rings and fries. Most are in ‘combo’ format to speed the process (you are in an airport after all) and the prices are probably a bit higher here.
Ordering was quick and easy but the receipt is a bit cryptic. While you order by combo, it lists out everything separately and it looks like we only got a $.08 discount for the combos. The food came out in about 10 minute and we loved that each combo came in its own box.
Bacon Triple Cheese Burger ($6.99). Obviously, not the healthiest option on the menu but I just couldn’t resist. Three burger patties (they appeared slightly larger than McDonald’s regular burgers), three slices of American cheese and bacon. The bun was slightly grilled as well, so it was a bit crisp and held everything together well. The burger meat itself was ‘ok’ and a bit too salty. The texture was a little on the chewy side, rather than a nice sear. The bacon got lost in all the cheese and it was really not needed and there was just too much cheese.
Onion Rings ($2.19) – The onion rings were hot and fresh and our favorite part of the whole meal.
Chili Cheese Dog ($3.09). A bit on the small side, we felt that it was just your regular fast food chili dog. We did like the cheese draped over the top of the chili.
Chili Cheese Burger ($3.39). Loved the bun, cheese and burger patty, but the chili topping was not as generous as on the chili cheese dog. Also with the brown-on-brown colors, I really couldn’t tell where the burger ended and the chili began. But complaining aside, I ate every bite. Same with the side of fries, a little greasy but no leftovers.
We’re glad we got a chance to try The Varsity restaurant in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It was a fun experience and it was definitely a step up from your typical fast food chains. It might not be a place we go out of our way for on a future lay-over, but we might make a trip for those onion rings.
